Gangtok has a knack for transforming mundane activities into remarkable travel memories. From an easy-going breakfast in MG Marg to a quiet visit at a local tea stall, and an afternoon of exploring independent cafés, Gangtok offers better insights into its nature than any busy travel itinerary. Its hilly surroundings are unique and memorable: mist hovers over the houses, and mountain views pop in and out of sight when the weather clears. From the creative corners of the Development Area to the peaceful atmosphere of Enchey Monastery, there are many reasons to discover Gangtok’s hidden treasures. For people who love good food, laid-back walks, and local life, this town offers a more relaxed holiday.
Why Gangtok rewards slow wandering
Gangtok is on a hill 1,650 meters above sea level, and its terrain goes uphill in layers. As a result, each turn in town opened up a new perspective of the Kanchenjunga range for me, depending on the weather. In Gangtok, a walk felt more like being in a cosy village than on a sightseeing tour.
MG Marg, Gangtok’s living room
MG Marg is an essential part of Gangtok residents’ lives. It is a pedestrian street where no vehicles are allowed. It allows people to walk, play or sit on benches. Flower beds and lovely lampposts play a key role in my explorations.
There are many cafes on both sides of the road. The café owners open extra seats upstairs for clients to observe the streets below. The hot chocolate they offered me was comforting after a long day spent walking around.
Cafés in Gangtok with mountain views
Several cafes in Gangtok base their concept on using the surrounding nature. There are huge windows and terraces that allow visitors to enjoy sunshine in the morning. I enjoyed fresh momos and thukpa, wood-fired pizzas, and local tea in one of them, to name just a few. The menu also offered cheesecake and apple pie, perfect for the cool temperature outside.
Tibet Road and Gangtok’s quieter corners
Tibet Road is less developed than MG Marg, which makes it attractive to people. One can buy woollen scarves, prayer flags, and hand-made souvenirs from small shops. There is also a café serving warm noodle soup.
Enchey and the temple-side calm in Gangtok
Situated on a summit above the city, Enchey Monastery is a great place to find tranquillity away from cafés. Cloth flags move in the breeze, and chanting monks can be heard from the sanctum. The neighbourhood is peaceful and has a few tea stalls right outside the monastery.
Curiously enough, tourists take a short trek downhill from Enchey Monastery, since many food stalls with delicious momos and hot butter tea are along this way.
Reaching Gangtok without the fatigue
Getting to Sikkim can be quite hectic. Most tourists arrive at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or Kolkata International Airport (CCU) before travelling by road or train to Gangtok. The entire journey took more than four hours and can be tiring, especially if travelling with family or after a busy work week.
However, I found that travelling in a business cabin to Kolkata made the flight more comfortable, with extra legroom, spacious seating and attentive onboard service. Priority check-in and boarding also made my airport routines smoother. Arriving refreshed helped when the next part of the journey involved winding mountain roads and exploring Gangtok’s steep streets.
Simple tips for a café-hopping day in Gangtok
A few basic habits can really help you enjoy the experience without hassle:
● Waking up early is important too because MG Marg is the quietest before 10
● A light jacket is advisable as it gets cold pretty quickly after sunset
● It’s best to carry some cash for tea stalls and shops
● At each café, you may want to try a small dish instead of a full meal
As it may rain unexpectedly, it’s a good idea to carry a compact umbrella. Make sure to wear shoes that will let you walk on steep streets with ease.
Final thoughts
When I visited Gangtok, I learned you do not need a whole day for a walk in the hill station. While MG Marg was an excellent start to my route, both Tibet Road and the Development area granted me other places to wander without hurry. Enchey Monastery became an invaluable addition to the café trip and gave the day a nice balance.
